PHOTOGRAPHY BIRDING WORKSHOP
Umbogavango Nature Reserve
Umbogavango Nature Reserve is situated about 25 km south of central Durban on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. This 36-hectare reserve was established in 1989 at the site of the storm water trap dams serving the AECI industrial plant at Umbogintwini. It doubles as an environmental education center for the children in local schools.

Come learn how to enhance your birding photography skills by joining us at Umbogavango Nature Reserve for this Photography Birding Weekend. The workshop is designed for beginners to intermediate photographers who already know the basics of photography. Advanced photographers are also welcome because you will find it a great refresher.
Weekend Program
Saturday
7:00 am: Meet and greet followed by a birding field session.
7:00 am: Meet and greet followed by a birding field session.
10:00 am: Group presentation and discussions about birding.
12:30 pm: Lunch break - finger lunch will be provided.
2:00 pm: Group discussion.
3:00 pm to sunset: Walking photography session and hide sessions until the light is gone.
Sunday:
7:00 am: Meet and greet followed by a walking birding field session or a hide session.
10:30 am: Group presentation and discussions about birding.
10:30 am: Group presentation and discussions about birding.
11:30 am: Basic photo editing tips and techniques.
1:00 pm: End of workshop.
NOTE: Times may change a little on the day.
NOTE: Participants are welcome to stay on to the end of the day on Sunday to continue photographing, you won't be alone!
Key Aspects covered in Group Sessions
- Birding ethics.
- Photography equipment and the importance of using it correctly.
- Defining what what makes a good photograph; composition, foreground, background, and more.
- Genres of bird photography: still standing, birds on a branch, portrait, birds in flight, birds in action, creative, abstract other.
- Camera modes and settings for various genres.
- Post processing workflow and techniques.
